The Northport Symphony Orchestra's 2022-2023 season continues with a program of music written by composers in their teen years.
While most of us were in high school, Felix Mendelssohn and Georges Bizet were already active composers crafting masterworks!
Bizet's Symphony in C was written in about one month's time, when he was just 17. Showing true teenage apathy, Bizet, apparently, showed no apparent interest in having it performed or published, and the work was never played in his lifetime. He never wrote about it in his letters, and his early biographers didn't even know it existed.
Not to be outdone, Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 1 in C minor was written when he was 15! Premiered at a private gathering to celebrate his sister's 19th birthday, the work is an early exhibition of Mendelssohn's brilliance, which he honed studying the works of Bach and Mozart.
